Summary:

The “Teacher Academy for AI Literacy” project aims to address the urgent need to empower teachers with the skills and knowledge to navigate the rapidly evolving landscape of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in education. This project is grounded in the European Commission's “Digital Competence Framework for Citizens (DigComp 2.2)” and the “DigCompEDU framework”, which emphasize the importance of digital and AI literacy for both learners and teachers.

Despite the European Commission's recognition of the importance of AI literacy, there is a significant gap in structured guidelines and curricula for teacher professional development in this area. Current AI literacy initiatives in Europe are fragmented, often overemphasizing technical aspects while neglecting the humanistic and ethical dimensions of AI. This initiative targets that gap by establishing a sustainable and scalable model for teacher training, empowering teachers to become confident users, critical evaluators, and efficient facilitators of AI technologies in education.

By establishing a transnational network of teacher education institutions, educational policy bodies and schools, the consortium will develop specialized training curricula and implement professional development initiatives for both pre-service and in-service teachers. All activities will be continuously monitored and evaluated based on a comprehensive quality assurance framework to be established within the project. The primary objective of this evaluation process is the continuous improvement of methodologies and outcomes. Through these initiatives and the implementation of a robust dissemination and sustainability plan, the consortium will establish a resilient and impactful Academy, contributing to the implementation of national strategies for teachers’ digital education, ensuring teachers use AI ethically and critically, uphold social equity, and actively combat inequalities and digital gaps.

Objectives:

O1. Establish a sustainable professional learning community, a Teacher Academy, for enhancing teachers' AI literacy;

O2. Develop a training curriculum for promoting critical and ethical AI use in educational organisations;

O3. Train student teachers and in-service teachers through pilot courses and evaluate the educational materials they develop by implementing them in real classrooms across Europe.

O4. Design and implement a quality assurance framework to evaluate the curricula, training courses, and school interventions, gathering feedback to refine and improve them.
